Department of Parasitology, Mycology and Entomology

The academic presentation of medical parasitology in Iranian universities was inaugurated in 1938 by one of the physicians of the School of Medicine, Tehran University of Medical Science. Parasitic diseases were already prevalent in Iran upon the inauguration of parasitology. More exactly, roughly 40% of Iranian people got infected with malaria annually resulting in a high rate of mortality. Intestinal parasites were highly prevalent in Iran. Large numbers of people were suffering from schistosoma and dracunculiasis in Khuzestan and Southern Iran, respectively. The contributions of professors and researchers of medical parasitology and mycology who educate students in universities along with the efforts of executive authorities of healthcare organizations have reduced the prevalence of parasitic diseases. Moreover, health promotion and improvement of the quality of life by the emergence and/or prevalence of running water, electricity and road construction have been influential in minimizing parasitic infections. The incidence of malaria, for instance, has declined from 40% to 0/5%. Medical parasitology, entomology, and mycology are currently offered to students in various academic programs as major and specialized courses. The Department of Parasitology, Mycology and Entomology at Lorestan University of Medical Sciences that was established twenty years ago comprises knowledgeable faculty members, i.e. two professors, three associate professors, two assistant professors, and an instructor.
